Why I started my own buisness - a Tandem Blog

The reason I started my own business

For whatever reason we decided to set up our businesses and become our own bosses, everyone does it for their own personal reasons. And the reasons for starting your own business can be varied.

People start their own business for independence, creativity, and the freedom to shape their career. Many are driven by a passion for a product or service, a desire for flexible work, or the chance to build wealth. Entrepreneurship also offers personal growth, fulfilment, and the opportunity to make a difference.

For example,

  • Freedom to work when I want!
  • Fed up with working for a company and making them money for an insignificant wage!
  • To become rich!
  • For the title of Business Owner!
  • Wanting to leave a legacy!

Do you take the time out to look at whether ot not your business is meeting the reasons that you set it up? Let’s take a minute to consider as to whether our aims/goals have or are being achieved with the following questions.

Does the business provide me with the lifestyle I set out to achieve?

Owning a business can offer the lifestyle you want, providing flexibility, independence, and personal satisfaction. However, it also demands commitment, resilience, and long hours, especially at the start.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are the number of hours I work align with my expectations?
  • Am I achieving the income I expected?
  • The best thing I ever did or ..?
  • Am I living to work or working to live?

We all had different reasons why we decided to take the plunge and set up our own companies. Is your business providing you with the lifestyle that you want it to. If not, are you on track to meet your goal?

Is your business aligned with your personal goals?

The most important thing I believe is to align your business goals with your personal goals!

Aligning your business goals with your personal goals is crucial for long-term success and fulfilment. When both are in sync, it gives you motivation, work-life balance, and satisfaction. Misalignment, however, can lead to burnout and frustration.

Over the years we have come across these different scenarios.

“I wanted to work less hours than when I was employed, I achieved this but am earning significantly less than when I was employed!”

“My goal was to earn £XXX per annum through my business, I achieved this by month 10, however I am working 7 days a week and the missus is well unhappy with me!”

I am sure we never went into business completely blind to the arena we are entering in. We all probably expected for the first couple of years long hours and reduced income whilst the business became established.

By now we all of course know how tough it can be to run a business.

However, the results can truly outstanding, and your business is then the lifeline to live your perfect life.

What questions do we ask our clients?

When we first meet a prospective client our first question is always:

“Is your business achieving what you set it out to do, for you personally and as a business”

As we discovered earlier, the two must work together in conjunction.

Maybe after being in business for a few years the two are not aligned. It is never too late!

Consider:

  • What do I want the business to supply to me personally?
  • What does the business have to achieve to do this and how?

Once the first question is answered, then formulate that plan to get you to journey end.

The journey might take a few more years but with determination and discipline, the likelihood of successfully completing the journey increases.

Don`t forget that idea you had in the beginning in bringing the business to life, the difference you were going to make, the amount of money you were going to make and to change people’s lives!
